You Like Me Too Much

STORIA DELLA CANZONE:

Con "You like me too much" George piazza per la prima volta due sue composizioni in un album dei Beatles.
Gli elementi che accomunano questa canzone con "I need you" sono diversi, anche questa infatti è una canzone d'amore e come "I need you" ha un ritmo abbastanza brioso, inoltre non godrà nell'immediato futuro di una particolare stima da parte del suo autore, che non la riproporrà mai dal vivo né tantomeno la ricorderà nella sua autobiografia degli anni '80 "I me mine".
La canzone inizialmente doveva essere inserita nelle scene del film "Help!", ma poi gli fu preferita "I need you" e "You like me too much" venne relegata sul lato B dell'album omonimo.
Secondo il critico musicale Lester Bangs, questa canzone era probabilmente il primo pezzo della storia del rock in cui il testo ammette che i due protagonisti non si amano più, ma che nessuno dei due ha il coraggio di dire che è finita.

Non sono ancora emerse outtakes di questa canzone che fu registrata ad Abbey Road il 17 febbraio del 1965. Ci vollero 8 nastri per completare l'opera. John Lennon si cimenta col piano elettrico mentre Paul e George Martin suonano un pianoforte Steinway a coda.

Il testo ironicamente felice, probabilmente riferito alla storia d'amore di Harrison con Patti Boyd,

esprime autodisapprovazione anziché profondità emotiva, una forzata allegria raccolta nel drop-in di pianoforte barrelhouse suonato a quattro mani da Paul e Martin.

STORIA DELLA CANZONE:

I Need You è la seconda fatica compositiva di George a finire su un album dei Beatles, per l'esattezza "Help!".

La canzone fu anche usata nel film "Help!", i Beatles la suonano in un enorme prato sferzato dal vento, attorniati da militari e carri armati.

Harrison non doveva amare molto questa sua composizione, infatti non esistono interviste in cui ne parli o la citi e inoltre quando pubblicò la sua biografia ufficiale "I me mine" in cui racconta la storia di tutte le sue canzoni, non fa menzione alcuna di I need you.

La canzone fu scritta presumibilmente tra il dicembre 1964 e il febbraio del 1965 è da escludere la teoria che  fu scritta tra febbraio e marzo mentre i Beatles si trovavano alle Bahamas per girare il film "Help!"perchè la canzone era già stata registrata ad Abbey Road, per l'esattezza il 15 febbraio 1965.

Non ci sono outtakes di questa canzone che fu completata quasi interamente il 15 febbraio 1965 ad Abbey Road in 5 takes. Proprio il quinto nastro fu giudicato il migliore, anche se la canzone era ancora prevalentemente acustica, il suo tratto d'istintivo ovvero la chitarra elettrica con robusto uso di pedale (quello che in seguito sarebbe stato riconosciuto come wah-wah) fu sovrainciso il giorno seguente.

Ma la chitarra elettrica non fu la sola sovraincisione del 16 febbraio, vennero infatti sovraincise la voce raddoppiata di George e un campanaccio.

Sempre il 16 febbraio venne prodotto un acetato della canzone che si caratterizza  per un missaggio diverso degli strumenti:

Ecco il parere di Ian MacDonald, che ritiene la canzone efficace nelle prime otto battute della struttura strofa/ritornello ma indebolita da un bridge armonicamente banale.

Un arrangiamento appena abbozzato e una registrazione poco limpida fanno pensare che Harrison non sia stato granché spalleggiato dagli altri.
